Sunset against 18th Century buildings at Södermalm on Riddarfjarden in Stockholm Sweden

Södermalm (English: Southern Isle, often shortened to "Söder", South), is a district in central Stockholm. It covers the large island formerly called "Åsön" (Ridge Island), and commonly the islands "Reimersholme" and "Långholmen" are referred to as part of Södermalm. With a population of over 100,000 (2006)[1], it is one of the most densely populated districts of Scandinavia. Though Södermalm usually is considered an island, water to its south does not flow freely but passes through a sluice.
