The town of Kautokeino, Finnmarksvidda, northern Norway, in wintertime, its red, wooden church standing in the middle. The town, which is mainly inhabited by ethnic Saami, is a Nordic centre of Saami culture. For the nomadic reindeer herders, Kautokeino is their winter home. In spring they move with their herds to summer pasture on the Atlantic coast, and in autumn they return to Kautokeino again.
