Venus. Synthetic aperture radar map of the surface of Venus, showing features called 'pancakes'. Rough areas appear bright, flat ones dark. These 'pancakes' measure up to 35 kilometres in diameter and range reach heights of up to 3 kilometres. They are thought to have formed by the eruption of extremely viscous lava. This map was created using data gathered by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft in January 1991.
