Manual of mental and physical tests : a book of directions compiled with special reference to the experimental study of school children in the laboratory or classroom . at it measures control of avoluntary movement, whereas the latter measure the extent ofinvoluntary movement which takes place when the hand or armis held at rest (Test 13). The technique most commonly adopted for the tracing orline-drawing test consists in passing a metallic needle or stylusalong a narrow slit between metallic strips and noting by tele-graph sounder, bell, electric counter, or graphic record, thenumber of contacts made in passing along a given portion ofthe slit. This slit may be straight and bounded by parallelsides (Bolton, 2), or by slightly converging strips (Bryan, 3;Thompson, 4), or the slit may in portions be curved, as in thescrolls used by Bagley. Some tests have been made at Colum-bia University with an irregular printed pattern, which is tobe traced by the subject with a lead pencil. In any of thesetests the movement may be arranged to involve primarily eitherthe finer muscles of the hand and fingers or the larger musclesconcerned in the whole-arm FIG. 32. TRACING-BOARD. The test here described follows the method used by Bryanand by Thompson. Apparatus.—Tracing-board (Fig. 32). Metallic stylus withflexible connecting wire. Telegraph sounder (Fig. 33). Twodry or other open-circuit cells. No. 18 annunciator wire. TEST 12: TRACING 153 Preliminaries.—Wire the battery in series with the tracing-board, the sounder and the stylus. Method.— (1) Seat 8 comfortably with the tracing-boardsquarely before him and the apex of the angle pointing towardhim, so that the movement is directly toward the body in themedian plane. Let 8 hold the stylus as he chooses, place the
