Fig. B. Welchs jointed apparatus for fractures of the leg. The apparatus may be flexed or extended, and fixed in the positionrequired, by the hinges. This is done by means of pinion-like teeth atthe circumference of the hinges, which are held in contact by screwsforming the pivots of the joints. It is fitted to limbs differing in lengthby sliding joints at the sides of the limb, and in the splint which supports 472 FRACTURES OF THE TIBIA AND FIBULA. the under side of the limb. The depth is increased or diminished byturning a screw at the bottom of the foot-piece. Welchs side splints, also (Fig. 203), made of veneered gutta percha, may be used in connection with his double inclined plane, and areespecially useful in fractures occurring near the ankle-joint.
