PFC fluid treatment of lungs. Premature baby is seen receiving PFC (perfluorochemical) fluid into its lungs. The fluid is being perfused from the syringe (at right), while the baby breathes on a ventilator. Premature babies can suffer from respiratory distress syndrome because air sacs in their lungs may collapse, starving the blood of oxygen. Researchers have developed a PFC fluid to treat this disorder. The fluid is introduced into the lungs, gently inflating the air sacs and preventing their collapse. PFC fluid then enables oxygen to pass through it into the blood, and carbon dioxide to diffuse out. After treatment the liquid simply evaporates away.
