Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the nose cone of the Delta II rocket launch vehicle. Fermi is a space observatory that will study high-energy phenomena such as supermassive black holes and gamma ray bursts from a low Earth orbit. Fermi was launched on 11th June 2008 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. It orbits Earth at an altitude of 550 kilometres. Fermi was formerly known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST.
