NsrR nitrogen oxide sensor transcription factor, illustration

Illustration of [4Fe-4S]-NsrR from Streptomyces coelicolor (ScNsrR, left) complexed with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, double helix, pink). This transcription factor controls the expression of three genes in response to the presence of nitric oxide, which is cytotoxic at high levels. Binding of ScNsrR to the genes upregulates their transcription, boosting levels of their detoxifying protein products.
