View NW of the King Stone standing stone, Warwickshire, England, UK. Situated near the top of a natural rise beside a prehistoric trackway, the stone may be a Neolithic waymark subsequently utilized as a marker for Bronze Age graves. The stone is part of a prehistoric complex which includes a stone circle & a megalithic tomb. Known collectively as the Rollright Stones, they have been incorporated into the folk tale of a Danish king, his army (the King's Men circle) & five treacherous knights (the Whispering Knights) all turned to stone by the trickery of a witch. In the C18th it was a popular practice to chip fragments from the stone to carry as amulets against the Devil and ill luck.
