CARMAT artificial heart inventor. French surgeon and professor Alain Carpentier (born 1933) holding the artificial heart he invented and helped develop. Carpentier, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, is a leading cardiac surgeon. His numerous honours for his work in cardiology include the 2007 Lasker Award. This artificial heart is being developed by the CARMAT company he founded. It is intended as an alternative to heart transplants. Originating from a 1988 patent by Carpentier, the first prototypes were built between 1995 and 2008. Clinical trials were authorised from late 2011, with commercial production intended for 2013.
