The follow-ing brief history of his eventful life, gleaned fromvarious sources, is believed to be correct: Henry Meiggs was born in Greene County, N. Y.,in the year 1811. He began life in Catskill as alumber merchant, with the late James Milliard,who at that time was one of the most extensivelumber dealers between New York and Meiggs lived in Catskill until he was twenty-five years of age, going from there in 1835 or 1836to Williamsburgh, L. I., where he again went intothe lumber trade with Minor Keith, now livingnear Babylon, L. I., who married his sister, ClaraMeiggs. Keith was formerly from Cairo, GreeneCounty, and brother-in-law of General GeorgeBeach, ex-State Senator, who married his sister.
