The ruins of Warsaw. Warsaw was heavily damaged in 1939. In 1944 the famous Warsaw Uprising was a major and serious attempt to fight the nazi occupiers. The German response was uncompromising and violent and once the Polish Home Army had been defeated the city was systematically destroyed.
