FRANKLIN PIERCE, the fourteenth president of the United States, was bornat Hillsborough, in the state of New Hampshire, Nov. 23, 1804. His father,Benjamin Pierce, held the rank of brigade-major in the American army duringthe Revolutionary war, and subsequently several political offices besides that ofgovernor of New Hampshire in 1827. Having completed a preparatory course o(studies, Franklin entered Bowdoin college at the age of sixteen years, and onhis graduation chose the law for a profession. He first became a student ofJudge Woodbury, at Portsmouth, thence he entered the law school of JudgeHowe at Northampton, and passed to the office of Judge Porter at Amherst, thusenjoying the best opportunities of qualifying himself for his profession. In 1827, Mr. Pierce, being admitted to the bar, commenced the practice of lawin his native town, and before the end of two years he was chosen a represent-ative in the state legislature.
