China: Empress Xiao Jie Su (1508-1528), consort of the 12th Ming Emperor Jiajing (r. 1521-1567). Hanging scroll painting, 16th-17th century. Empress Chen (1508-1528), formally Empress Xiaojiesu, was the consort of the Jiajing Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. She was chosen to be empress by her aunt, the Empress Dowager Zhang, though the fraught personal relationship between the emperor and the dowager meant that the Jiajing Emperor did not take a liking to Chen. When she was pregnant, the emperor exposed her to a fit of rage that caused a fatal miscarriage.
