Cattleyas, phalae- nopsis, cymbidiums, cypripediums and other orchids were all in robust health. One of the carnation houses is being changed over for cattleyas and laelias. Betail business here is and has been good all summer. Various Notes. The show of children's gardens' products at Horticultural hall Septem- ber 1 and 2 was the most extensive ever seen in Boston. The quality of vegeta- bles ruled high and competition was keen. In the classes for beets, potatoes, carrots, sweet corn, tomatoes, squash and onions, there were from fifty to eighty- five entries each, and as many as forty collections in one class were staged. The interest in the productions from the children's war garden was shown by the large attendance of the public. No show of late years in Boston created more enthusiasm. The condolences of numerous friends go out to Daniel Iliffe, our well-known local greenhouse builder, in the sudden death of his wife August 30. Interment was at South Weymouth September 1, a good number in the trade attending and sending floral tributes. William C. Stickel, of Lexington, is sending in the finest long-stemmed white asters I have seen this season. His carnations look well. Matchless and Pink Delight are his leading stand- bys. Penn's report more than fifty wed- ding orders filled last week and funeral business good. The number of war brides at present is
