Chapter II. FIRST METHOD OF SUBJECTION. AS before explained, disabling an\- part of the horses body willproduce in him a corresponding sense of helplessness ; andwhen we disable the whole body, or overmatch his pow-ers wholly, we create in him a powerful sense of our mastery, anda corresponding sense of his own helplessness. The simplest andmost effective means of doing this is by the method here given. I give two rigs, one of leather and one of rope. The leatherrig works well, is not difficult to fit, but is troublesome to make,. Mustang Ponies. and , costing from eight to fifteen dollars. The roperig works equally well, and can be made of any old rope in a fewminutes, at a mearly nominal cost. The buckle should havetwo tongues, and be made of good wrought iron. When this rig ison and drawn tightly from the part over the backbone, a doublestrap, the length of the back, with a strong crupper, should beattached. Four or five inches on the off sideshould be fastened, at the front edge of thissurcingle, a strong two-inch ring. On the
