Close up detail of a Sally Lightfoot crab With Bright Red Claws on Caribbean Rocks.

Close up detail of a Sally Lightfoot crab (Grapsus grapsus) also known as the Red Rock Crab. The common name is thought to have originated from a Caribbean dancer. It is a very nimble and agile crab with rapid reactions seeming to outguess those seeking to capture it. It lives on rocks close to the splash zone and can flatten itself onto the surface if waves are too fierce. It is a grazer, predator, and carrion feeder with a wide diet and playing a very important role in this marine ecosystem. This individual with characteristic bright red claws had its home on a slab of rocks off Palm Island and came out to feed at low tide.
