The commandant, a young Belgianofficer, unfortunately was not famihar with the sur-rounding country, and could not give me directionsas to my route. There was also a deartli of bearers, and althougharmed messengers, known as pistonniers, had beensent out in every direction, only forty men turnedup the following morning instead of the hundred thatwere needed.
