The IndianTerritory was for thefirst time canvassedlike other portionsof the Union, andso was the new territory of Hawaii. The United States were divided into 207supervisor districts and 53,000 enumerationdistricts. Enumeration began June i, 1900,continuing two weeks in cities, elsewherethirty days. Persons in the navy, army, andon Indian reservations were numbered. Forthose in institutions there were special enu-merators. Each enumerator used a street-. The returns were tabulated by an electricaldevice first employed ten years before. Itswork was automatic and so fine that it wouldeveti obviate errors. For instance, age, sex,etc., being denoted by punch-holes in cards,the machine would refuse to pass a cardpunched to indicate that the person wasiAree years old and married. Nearly 2,000 employees toiled upon thecensus during the latter part of 1900, andnearly a thousand during the entire year1901. From July 14, 1900, piecemeal re-sults were announced almost daily. ByOctober the population of the principal citieswas out. A preliminary statement of totalpopulation was given to the press, October30, 1900, followed by a verified one a monthlater. The first off
