Manual of pathological anatomy . articularly insists onthe point, and we think he is cor-rect, that when an ulcer increasesin depth so as to perforate the intes-tine, it advances not by continueddeposition and softening of the same matter as that originallyproduced, but by simple extension of the ulcerating action. The matter which causes the tumefaction of the agminate andsolitary glands chiefly consists of actual multiplication of thecorj)uscles in the (agminated lymph and solitary) glands accom-panied by a certain amount of exudation; these newly-formedelements seem to be particularly liable to decay, so that a largeportion of the mass may be found in the condition of granulardegeneration, or converted into amorphous molecular granules and grains of pigmentary matter are often presentin it, but they are by no means peculiar to the typhoid state. Theygive to the glands a black dotted appearance, as seen by the nakedeye, and this we have observed more than once after death fromother causes than Typhoid ulcers in small from haemorrhage. The out-line figures represent vertical sec-tions. In the upper figure the mar-gins of the ulcer are thickened; inthe lower they are clean cut, as ifpunched. INTESTINAL AFFECTION IN ENTERIC FEVER. 591 Lymphatic Glands.—The mesenteric glands become invariablyenlarged in all cases of intestinal atfection, just in the same way Fig. 136.
