Shinkansen bullet train nearing Tokyo station with a local monorail train on the bridge above, This first type (0 Series) of Shinkansen first saw service in Japan in 1964 and at the time was the world's fastest train at 220 kph (140 mph). Type 0 trains ran until 2008. Tokyo's monorail was opened in 1964 (to service that year's Olympic Games). It links Hamamatsucho and Hameda Airport. The trains were built by Hitachi to the German ALWEG design. It is considered to be the world's busiest (and most profitable) monorail.
