In interior of open gallery in palace with classical columns & draperies, Ahasuerus (L) places a crown on Esther's head; attendants & an audience on either side frame the scene, some kneeling on ground with richly decorated rug & elaborate vases, others on balcony with musical instruments; an archer with panther skin bowing (R) Borders missing (Soustelle). The present tapestry may be recorded in Fénaille & 38 as having been part of a set of four tapestries of the Life of Esther woven on low looms in the workshop of Jacques Neilson between 1761 & 1765. The set would have been executed for an English nobleman, Lord Foley & traced in 1900 to the collection of the Baron Albert de Rothschild at Halton Castle, England. However, Fénaille states that the set in question would have featured the border designed in 1738 by Pierre-Josse Perrot, also referred to as the first border. Yet, the present tapestry & the other three (also cataloged), do not have borders. This may mean that the borders were removed at a later date or that this set is not the one commissioned by Lord Foley (Campbell/Soustelle). This panel is the only tapestry in the supposed set of 4 without a visible Neilson signature (Soustelle).
