HOUSES IN DUNDEE — 71 FOURTH PERIOD The rooms in the interior have all been finished in panelled tine style of this finishing will be observed from the Sketch (Fig. 1185),which was kindly supplied by Mr. A. C. Lamb, Dundee. It shows thepanelling of the east room on the first floor, the ceiling of which is 9 feet7 inches in height. One of the panels still bears an artistically painted. We may state that about the beginning of last century theproprietor, Bailie Ferguson, had it repaired and decorated ; but we inclineto think that the woodwork shown in Fig. 1183 is of an earlier date. About the year 1770 part of the building was leased to the Governmentas a custom-house, and was occupied as such for many years. In the course of carrying out some repairs early in this century theconical roofs of the towers were taken down and the walls lowered as FOURTH PERIOD HOUSES IN DUNDEE they are shown in the View, and during these alterations a hirge hoard ofsilver coins was found secreted in the roof. The house is now divided into small lodgings, with shops on theprincipal floor. Since this was written the building has been partially taken down,and it is found that the upper stories of each of the towers
