El Capitan and surrounding land at sunset

El Capitan is a volcanic plug known as Agathla by the Navajo. The name is derived from the Navajo word 'ag ha la' meaning 'much wool', apparently for the fur of antelope and deer accumulating on the rock. It rises about 1500 feet above the surrounding landscape and is a prominent feature just off the road into Monument Valley from Kayenta.
