The squamosal, lying anterolateral to the supratemporal, is tendinouslyconnected to the quadrate head (Figs 3, 13). The supratemporal lies postero-medial to the squamosal and shares with the much reduced paroccipital processof the otic capsule the articulation with the quadrate head by means of a padof fibrocartilage (Fig. 3). ; .ls. 1mmFia. 3. Posterolateral view of the skull. The proportions of the posterior half of the skull are of importance. Thetemporal region, where the adductor musculature is accommodated, is laterallycompressed and the otico-occipital region is much expanded both laterallyand posteriorly (Figs 1A-B, 2A). These relations create the impression that thesuspensonum is more anteriorly located than in a non-fossorial lizard such asMabuia. The entire posterior border of the parietal meets the supraoccipitaland the fused exoccipital-opisthotic complex in a dorsally lying suture. Thereis thus no posttemporal fenestra and the back of the skull is smooth and bluntly CRANIAL AND CERVICAL MUSCLES OF TYPHLOSAURUS AURANT1ACUS AURANTIACUS 175 rounded (Fig. 1A). Immediately below the foramen magnum a kidney-shapedcondyle is present, composed laterally of the exoccipitals and medially of asuturally distinct basioccipital bone. Ventrally the basioccipital forms theposterior portion of the skull base, curvi
