In The Honor of the Family, as played atthe Van Ness, we find ourselves mysteriouslytransferred to that provincial France of nearlya century back which witnessed the passagefrom Paris of many Bonapartists who plottedagainst the Bourbons. We can not, eitherfrom knowledge or experience, pass upon thecorrectness of the impression, but we feel in-stinctively that it is well justified. Aside fromthe motive and action of the piece itself, theeffect has been gained by many thoughtfullyplanned details in the matter of accessoriesand costume. The setting is unchanged throughout thepiece, except in so far as details are modi-fied to indicate the change from daylight tonight-time. But the furniture, the hangings,the simple, provincial house costume and head-dress of the women, the uniforms of the men,all create an effect that tallies with thatvague, general impression gained from Bal-zacs novels, and convinces us that, for dra-matic
