The science and art of surgery : being a treatise on surgical injuries, diseases, and operations . fissured orcracked, and surrounded by much atheroma. These patches are situatedin the longitudinal fibrous coat, and are cliiefly deposited where thisstructure abounds, as at the arch of the aorta, the bifurcation of the 26 DISEASES OF ARTERIES. Fig. 349. — Annular iliacs, and in the carotid arteries. The inner coat is usually thickenedand opaque where it covers the patch, and the middle much thinned andwasted. Annular Calcification principally occurs in arteries of the thirdmagnitude, such as the popliteal and the femoral. It commences by thedeposit of granules of calcareous matter (Fig. 349), which are arrangedin lines running transversely to the axis of the vessel; these lines grad-ually increase in breadth until they co-alesce laterally, the intervening spacesbeing filled up, and the vessel beingconverted into a rigid tube. This formof calcification I have found to occurin the transverse fibres of the middlecoat. Billroth believes it to commencein the muscular fibre-cells of the middlecoat. It is accompanied by but littleatheromatous matter. Tubular Calcification appears tobe an increased degree of the varietiesjust described, the arteries being con-verted into pipes or tubes of calcareousmatter, with the exception of a fewthreads and patche
