English Puritan, William Prynne (1600-1669). Original copperplate engraving by Elisha Kirkall (1682-1742). This engraving was first used in the 1740 edition of 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon; his history of the English Civil War is frequently referred to as 'Clarendon's Rebellion’. Prynne, a lawyer, began publishing Puritan tracts attacking the Anglican church in 1627. He was placed in a pillory and had his ears cut off in 1637 for attacking the views of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud. Similar punishment was simultaneously inflicted on Puritan soldier, Captain John Bastwick (1593-1654), and on the radical Puritan preacher, Henry Burton (1578-1648). Prynne's persecution by King Charles I intensified antagonisms between the king and Parliament in the years preceding the English Civil Wars, which broke out in 1642.
