Human Monster, Dog Boy, 16th Century
Woodcut of a "child, part dog" from Des Monstres et prodiges by Ambroise Par̩, 1573. Des Monstres is filled with unsubstantiated accounts of sea devils, marine sows, and monstrous animals with human faces. With its extensive discussion of reproduction and illustrations of birth defects, the book invited accusations of pornography. It has been suggested that the child may have suffered from Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) a genetic disorder present from birth, but not always diagnosed at birth. It causes a range of physical, cognitive and medical challenges and affects both genders equally. It is often termed as Bushy Syndrome and is also known as Amsterdam dwarfism. It is a genetic disorder that can lead to severe developmental anomalies. It affects the physical and intellectual development of a child. Some of the features and characteristic include: delayed growth and small stature, limb differences (missing limbs or portions of limbs), small head size (microcephaly) thick eyebrows, which typically meet at midline (synophrys), long eyelashes, short upturned nose and thin downturned lips, and excessive body hair.
