The drought brought on by late rains left Lake Nzerakera bone dry as late as January. The vast expanse to mud was a death trap to many animals who rely on the large body of water for their existance. It is feared the new HEP Dam at Steigler's Gorge will effect the flow of the Rufiji and make such catastrophic fluctuations a regular occurance.
