Illustration of an astronomic sextant made of steel from Tycho Brahe's observatory at Uraniborg, Hven, Denmark (now Sweden). It was used for Brahe's observations of the Great Comet of 1577. Brahe (1546-1601) is considered the greatest astronomical observer of the pre-telescopic era. This illustration is from a 1603 edition of Brahe's 'De Mundi Aetherei Recentioribus Phaenomenis Liber Secundus' (Second Book About Recent Phenomena in the Celestial World) first published in 1588.
