Abdominal aorta. Coloured abdominal angiogram showing the normal appearance of the aorta and upper iliac arteries (coloured red). The division of the aorta into the left and right iliac arteries is seen at upper centre. The iliac arteries supply the legs with blood. Blood vessels branching from the aorta just above this region (not visible here) supply the abdominal organs such as the kidneys, liver and intestines with oxygenated blood. Angiography is an X-ray technique in which the arteries are visualised by injecting the patient with a radio-opaque contrast medium.
