Casting a Nansen Bottle. A Nansen bottle is clamped and wired to a deep sea cable in readiness for casting by a crew member on a platform extending from the deck of the Coast Guard Cutter Casco. This bottle is spaced a number of feet apart from other bottles attached to the cable so that it will trip and turn at the desired depth in the ocean to induct water. Twin thermometers on the bottle record the temperature of the water precisely to a thousandth of a degree. An electro-hydraulic winch is used to lower and raise the cable.
