A wretched enthusiast,named Jacques Clement, excited to fanaticism by theirwords, and also by the duchesse de Montpensier, who,in her frantic hatred, is said to have purchased apromise of murder with her favours, made a vow toassassinate the king. The unfortunate man repaired,on the 1st of August, to the camp of Henry III., andasked to speak with him. Being introduced into histent, he fell on his knees; and, presenting a petitionto the monarch, struck him, at the same moment, inthe lower part of the belly, with a knife. The kingwithdrew the weapon from the wound, and smote theassassin with it, in the forehead,—who was instantly. J4 p\;^ IN THE REIGN OF HENRY III. 279 dispatched by the guards. Henrys wound was mor-tal : he died in the arms of the king of Navarre, whomhe named as his successor, advising him to embracethe catholic faith, if he desired to reign over pope, Sixtus V., declared Henry unworthy ofChristian burial. In full consistory, he exalted Jac-ques Clement above Judith and Eleazar; and ordereda magnificent funeral service, for the repose of hissoul. With Henry III. the house of Valois becameextinct,—after having reigned two hundred and sixty-one years, and given thirteen kings to France.
