The White Mountain National Forest area consists of about 827,600acres in Coos, Carroll and Grafton counties in New Hampshire, andprojects slightly into the adjoining State of Maine. Its boundariesembrace nearly all of the mountain country from the Pliny Range onthe north to Sandwich Dome on the south, and from beyond the MaineState line on the east nearly to the Connecticut River on the west. Itcontains numerous mountains which reach a height of over 4000 feetand the loftiest of these, Mount Washington, rises to an altitude of 6,290feet above sea level, and is one of the highest mountains of the Appa-lachian system.
