Hip joint bones and anatomy. Artwork of the bones that form the two hip joints (right and left). The hip is a ball-and-socket joint that provides the mobility needed for walking and running. The hip socket is a cavity in the acetabulum bone of the pelvis, a set of bones that join to the spine in the main body torso. The ball of the hip joint, shown disarticulated at left, is the head of the femur (thigh bone). This head is joined by a neck to the femoral shaft. The base of the spine is at top centre, including lower vertebrae and the sacrum and coccyx. Other prominent pelvis bones are the ilium (wing-shaped, above hip) and ischium (loop, below hip).
