CONTACT DERMATITIS

A photographic image showing contact dermatitis, also called dermatitis venenata. This is a skin rash resulting from exposure to either an irritating or allergic substance. In the first type, an irritant, as detergent or acid, causes a sore much like a burn. Treatment is to flush the area immediately with water. In the allergic type, the reaction is delayed. Symptoms are swelling, blisters, and large amounts of fluid in the body tissues. Poison ivy is a common example of this type. Treatment includes steroid creams and soothing or drying lotions. The irritating or allergic substance should be avoided.
