Hand-coloured antique engraving by Abraham Hulk Jacobszoon (1731-1817) from a drawing by an unknown artist. It was created for the influential 36-volume 'Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière …’, published by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, between 1749 and 1788. This page, later tinted skilfully by hand, comes from the rare 1780 French edition of the 'Histoire'. Saki (genus Pithecia) are any of seven species of arboreal South American monkeys with long non-prehensile furred tails. They feed on fruit, leaves and seeds, which they grind in their powerful jaws. Abraham Hulk Jacobszoon (1731-1817) was a Dutch engraver and draftsman who lived and worked in his native Amsterdam until 1787. In 1788 he settled in Paris, where he was active until 1817. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), was a French naturalist remembered for his comprehensive work on natural history. He studied mathematics, medicine and botany in Dijon and Angers and in 1739, after travels in England and Italy, was appointed keeper of the Jardin du Roi (royal botanical garden) in Paris and charged with cataloguing the royal collections in natural history. He transformed the task into an undertaking to produce an account of the whole of nature, which became his great work, '", the first modern attempt to systematically present all existing knowledge in the fields of natural history, geology and anthropology in a single publication.
