Golden barrel cacti (Echinocactus grusonii). A cactus is a plant that has tissues adapted to minimise water loss in the arid environment it inhabits. Cactus leaves are reduced to narrow spines, and the plant surface is covered in a thick, waxy outer layer. A cactus may also be able to store water. The golden barrel cactus is native to central Mexico. It was described by Heinrich Hildmann in 1891. Photographed in a botanical garden in Israel.
