Antlion larva mouthparts, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Antlions (family Myrmeleontidae) are lacewings named for the aggressive predatory nature of their larvae. Antlion larvae dig pits to trap passing ants. The larvae live at the bottom of the pit and grab any ants that fall in, crushing them with their powerful jaws. The winged adults feed on pollen and plant juices. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
