There was a school-house a few years since on Bangent Street, where a small oilier now stands, not tarfrom the corner of Purchase Avenue. Here oneEvans B. Hollis taught school some tifty years was an Englishman, and is said to have been anexcellent teacher. He came to Rye from Sing Sing,and taught lirst for a while at the school near SawPit. The school on Regent Street had existed longbefore Mr. Hollis time. Shortly after the passage, in 1812, by the New York. RYK <; Legislature, of an act for the establishment of commonschools, steps were taken in Rye to carry its provisionsintoeffect. On April 6,1813, a vote was taken, agree-ably to notice from the County Clerk, that the SchoolFund was to be distributed ; and it was carried in theaffirmative, to accept of the money allotted the same meeting school commissioners and in-spectors were chosen for the first time. Deall, Ezrahiah Wetmore and Jared Peckwere elected commissioners, and the Rev. SamuelHaskell and Messrs. John Guion, Charles Field andJohn Brown were chosen inspectors of schools. The division of the town into school districts wascommenced in 1814. Three districts and two neigh-borhoods were formed. A fourth district was addedin 1826. According to this division, District No. 1,on Rye Neck, comprehended that part of the towns
