Thehour of dreadful gloom soon came, and he was leftalone in the world, without wife or child. When the terrible Reljellion burst forth, which di-vided our country into two parties, and two only, remained steadfast in the principles which hehad always cherished, and gave his sympathies tothat pro-slavery party with which he had ever beenallied. He declined to do anything, either by voiteor pen, to strengthen the hand of the National Gov-ernment. He continued to reside in Concord untilthe time of his death, which occurred in Oclol er,1869. He was one of the most genial and social olmen, an honored communicant of tlie EpiscopalChurch, and one of the kindest of neighbors. Generous to a fault, he conttibuted liberally for the al-leviation of suffering and want, and many of his lowrspeople were often gladened by his material bounty. I.
