The abbey-church, originally in the Romanesque style, and the abbey-buildings,which are occupied by public offices, form an extensive pile. French isstill spoken by the upper classes, and the Walloon dialect by the lowerthroughout the district (about 10,000 inhab.). The Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg^ with an area of about 1000 sq. ^13,280 inhab. (almost all Roman Catholics), forms the E. half of theold duchy of Luxembourg (part of the Spanish Netherlands) and from1839 to 1890 was connected with Holland by a personal union. Down to1866 it was a member of the Germanic Confederation, but in 1867 it wasdeclared by the Treaty of London a neutral territory, with a separate ad-ministration. After the death of King William III. of Holland in 1890, itpassed according to the treaty of succession to the Grand-duke Adolf (ofNassau; b. 1817). It still belongs to the German Zollverein or CustomsUnion, but as the duty on spirits is not raised as in Germany, a tolerablyrigid customs examination takes place. The present duchy includes the part of the Ardennes and sharesthe general characteristics of that district, consisting of a somewhat mono-tonous plateau (with an average height of about 1600 ft.
