Fibrosis of the liver. Coloured scanning electron micrograph showing human liver tissue (red-brown) affected by fibrosis. This is a condition characterised by an overgrowth of bundles of connective tissue (pale yellow). Fibrous tissue may be formed as an exaggerated healing response to injury, infection or inflammation. Specialised structures within the liver are replaced by the fibrous tissue impairing the function of this organ. This image also shows typical features of normal liver cells whose surface is characterised by irregular buds and microvilli. Magnification: x2350 at 6x7cm size.
