The name came from the fact that it was once the last stretch of the Ganges before it merges with the Bay of Bengal. The link was severed when the river changed its course. It is now fed by the flow from another river called Turag. It is now a polluted river due to population density and India’s restrictions on the water flow which is damaging the river’s health.
