E. coli bacteria, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Escherichia coli are Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria that are part of the normal flora of the human gut. The long hair-like structure are flagella, which are used for locomotion. The shorter hair-like structures are pili, which are used for conjugation. Some strains produce a toxin that causes severe diarrhoea and can be fatal, especially in the very young or elderly. Magnification: x6,600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
