A A show a one year old Smyrna fig tree, the taller illustrating its appear- ance just as it came from the nursery rows; that to the left is the same specimen cut back to 18 or 20 inches, with its roots properly pruned for planting. The one foot mark shows the depth of the original cut- same tree pruned for planting. Be sure to remove all bruised and lacerated roots. Do not top the tree until it is planted and be sure to leave a few of the lateral branches, shortening them in to two inches. These will form the head and give an outlet for the sap in case there should be blind buds which do not start. Head the tree back to 18 inches from the top of the ground.
