The outside walls wereleft standing and apparently uninjured, and at first it wasthought that these could be utilized in the restoration of thebuilding. Acting on this supposition, the Legislature, whichwas then in session, appointed a Commission to effect therestoration and appropriated the sum of $50,000 for that pur-pose. An examination of the standing walls was immediatelymade by competent engineers, and this examination showedthat the walls, not only of the ruined building, but also of therotund
