Being threatenedwith lung trouble, his physicianadvised him to go into the dryatmosphere of Texas and liveoutdoors. He went among theIndians of Western Texas andfollowed their mode of living for a year or two. Recoveringhis health he went to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he remainedseven or eight years. He came to Texas in 1826 and obtained,on December 22, 1826, a contract to colonize a large tract ofcountry in East Texas. He sold his rights under this contractto a New York company. He was married in New York in1831 and returned to Texas. In
