Then turn the bandage once or twicearound the arm and body, fasten the pad to these turns of the bandage, and keeping the fore-arm in a right angle over thebreast, envelop this by the turnsof the bandage, carrying the rollerfrom under the elbow over thesound shoulder several times.(See illustration.) The variousturns of the bandage then have tobe fastened by stitches to eachother, wherever needed; on thebroken spot a compress wet inArnica lotion, has to be put andkept wet from time to time. BROKEN RIBS. 595 older persons a month. If the bandages get loose or deranged,they have to be re-adjusted. In bed the patient should reclineon the sound side, rather elevated. The wound fever is slight;if it is not, however, give Aconite and Arnica alternately, afew doses. Diet must be light and not stimulating. Broken Ribs. The fracture of one or more ribs is to be presumed to exist,if, after a fall or blow, the patient feels at every breath a stitchin the injured side, and if a slight cracking is heard orfelt by the hand, placed flatly on the injured part, while thepatient draws in a long breath. Keep the patient as quiet aspossible and put a tight bandage around his chest, reachingfrom the arm-pits to the short ribs; before this is tightenedand fastened, lay
